July 24, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors committed two errors on the same play, helping the Brockton Rox score four runs in the top of the seventh to blow open a close game and win 9-3 Thursday night in Allentown.
The Ambassadors got out to a 1-0 lead after one inning. Ender Gonzalez singled, then Vic Davilla doubled with one out. Marlon Roche followed with a single to drive in Gonzalez and make it 1-0. That was all the Ambassadors would get out of the opportunity, as Roche was caught stealing and Brian Macchi grounded out to end the inning.
The Rox responded in the second. Craig Lewis hit a two run home run off Ambassador starter Nolan Fry to give the Rox the lead that they would never relinquish. Brockton scored another run in the fourth, on back-to-back doubles from Lewis and Melvin Rosario. Brockton got another run in the sixth, with another double from Lewis driving in Mike Torres.
The Ambassadors scored a run in the bottom of the inning off Rox starter Chad Ward on three straight two out singles from Macchi, Greg Schmidt, and Tito Cruz. The inning also had another caught stealing for Roche, this time on a botched hit and run play. The Ambassadors ran into four outs on the basepaths, with three caught stealings and one runner, Gonzalez, thrown out at the plate.
Fry gave up two singles with one out to Junior Medina and Nestor Smith in the seventh and exited the game for Joe Gannon. Gannon got Francisco Matos to ground one right back to him, but threw the ball into center field, allowing Medina to score. On the same play, Smith tried to score and the throw from Harris in center was over home plate, for the second error on the play. Saul Bustos followed with single, then Mike Torres doubled home Matos and Bustos to make it 8-2.
Each team would add another run and the Rox would win 9-3. Fry took the loss, he is now 3-4. Ward picked up the win , moving his record to 2-3. Lewis finished the night 3-5 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Rosario was 3-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. The win moves the Rox over the .500 mark in the second half, they are now 7-6. The Ambassadors fall to 4-10. The Rox took the four game series from the Ambassadors 3-1. Berkshire comes into town for three over the weekend. Tomorrow night is Custom CD case night, courtesy of Service Electric. Also, Democratic Presidential Candidate Richard Gebhardt will be in attendance.
