ATLANTIC CIY, N.J. (July 24, 2003) â The Atlantic City Surf have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Jason Jacome, a veteran of 106 Major League games.
Originally selected by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 1991 draft, Jacome broke into the Majors in 1994 with the Mets and went 4-3 with a 2.67 ERA and 30 strikeouts in eight starts.
He started the 1995 season on a bad note with the Mets, going 0-4 with a 10.29 ERA, and was sent back to the minors and then traded to the Kansas City Royals organization.
Jacome would pitch 71 games with the Royals from 1995-97 before signing with the Cleveland Indians. After being sent back to the minor leagues in 1998, Jacome put together his best professional season for Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. He went 14-2 with a 3.26 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 24 starts, earning him a spot on the Baseball America Triple-A All-Star team.
After allowing eight runs in his only Major League start in 1998 with Cleveland, Jacome opted to play in Japan for two seasons with Yakult. He played for Triple-A Tuscon of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2001 and went 8-6 with a 4.09 ERA with the Memphis Redbirds (AAA) of the St. Louis Cardinals organization last season.
"Jason Jacome will bring a wealth of experience to our team and add a much-needed lefty to our pitching staff," said Surf general manager Mario Perrucci.
