Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - J.C. Huguet was perfect through 4.2 innings and Atlantic City crushed home runs in the game's final four innings to drop Worcester by an 8-1 final at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field on Tuesday evening.
The home run onslaught was one night after Worcester hitters hit three long balls off Surf starter Brian Rodaway. Tom Cochran was solid over seven innings, but was still handed his first loss of the season. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Chuck Jeroloman broke up Huguet's perfect game with two outs in the fifth inning while Scott Grimes, B.J. Weed, and Francisco Caraballo had the team's other hits on the evening. In total, the pitching trio of Huguet, Walker Whitley, and Kyle George only faced four batters over the minimum.
Atlantic City took advantage of a Tornadoes miscue for the game's first run. Lucas Taylor was the benefactor, reaching second base when Jeroloman air mailed the throw to first. Anthony Granato's ensuing double to left field scored Taylor for the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jason Hurst made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left, plating Granato.
With two on and one out in the fourth, Brad Thoma's single to left drove in Clyde Williams from second to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Surf swatted home runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings while in the process opening up an 8-1 lead. Thoma started the power surge with a two-out solo shot to make it 4-0. Worcester did pick up its first run in the bottom of the inning when Weed blooped a single to right-center, scoring Grimes who had doubled.
Hurst and Williams followed with solo shots of their own in the seventh and eighth frames to make it 6-1 while Josh Burrus hit a two-run shot which hit the left field foul pole good for the game's final runs.
The Tornadoes continue their series with Atlantic City on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Alex Pena takes the hill for the Tornadoes; he will be opposed by Derek Barrow. It marks the final "Tanks 4 Tickets" night with $4 Grandstand and Box tickets and $1 hot dogs! Thursday is Faith Night while Friday features another awesome fireworks display!
