Surf Lose Game One Heartbreaker In 12 Innings

September 3, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Atlantic City Surf News Release

Quebec City - Quebec 2B Josh Colafemina scored a 12th-inning unearned run, the only tally of the evening, as the Capitales edged the Atlantic City Surf, 1-0, in Game One of the Can-Am League first-round series.

The contest was a pitcher's duel from the beginning, with neither squad able to touch the other's ace. Atlantic City starter Adam Cox threw seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight, while league ERA leader Michel Simard went eight innings for Quebec, giving up five hits and fanning five.

The relievers were equally strong, as Tony Pierce and Kyle George worked out of several late-inning jams for the Surf, while the Capitales' Jason Schutt and Orlando Trias combined to strike out seven Atlantic City hitters in four innings.

The game's lone run came in the 12th after Surf pitcher Walker Whitley (0-1) retired the first two hitters of the inning. 2B Josh Colafemina drew a walk and stole second; C William Plaza's throw on the attempt went wide of the base, and CF Lucas Taylor then overran the errant throw, enabling Colafemina to circle the bases and score.

Both teams had numerous chances, especially later in the game. The Capitales left the bases loaded in the ninth and tenth innings, and stranded another pair of runs in the 11th, before finally breaking through in the 12th. The Surf also loaded the bases with no outs in the 11th inning, but could bring home a run. In all, Quebec left 17 men on base, while Atlantic City left 11. Trias (1-0) registered the win in relief for the Capitales.

Offensively, the Surf managed eight singles, with Plaza going 2-for-5. Quebec 3B Patrick Deschenes and 1B Eddie Lantigua both went 2-for-5 as well.

The two teams meet in the second game of the five-game series on Thursday evening. Brian Rodaway throws for Atlantic City against the Capitales' Karl Gelinas.
