Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- A night after pounding out 8 runs on 14 hits, RHP Monte Mansfield quieted the Tornadoes bats as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Worcester Tornadoes, 3-1, at Hanover Insurance Park on Saturday night.

For the seventh straight game, Tornadoes pitching held the opposition to three runs or less, but Worcester fell to 3-4 in those games as the offense never could get going against Mansfield and the Atlantic City bullpen. The Surf struck first, taking advantage of two Tornadoes errors to score an unearned run off start Matt Weagle (0-1) and go up, 1-0. The Surf would tack on another run in the 5th, as Joe Burke doubled, was sacrificed to third and scored on a double play grounder to make it 2-0.

The Tornadoes would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 5th, as a single and two walks set up a Dominic Ramos sacrifice fly and brought Worcester within one run at 2-1. But Atlantic City got the run back in the 7th off Matt Salvato on an RBI single by Wally Rosa to make it 3-1. Meanwhile, Mansfield (3-4) cruised through 7 string innings, allowing just 3 hits and the one run while striking out five.

The Tornadoes had chances, but Yohanny Valera struck out swinging with the tying runs in scoring position to end the 8th and Josh Beauregard was retired on a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop with two men on to end the game.

Mansfield (3-4) picked up the win and Weagle (0-1) was the hard-luck loser. Matt Pike pitched a scoreless 9th for his league-leading 10th save of the season. The Tornadoes will turn to righty Junior Guerrero in the rubber game of the three-game series against Atlantic City on Sunday night. He will be opposed by Surf lefty Brian Rodaway. First pitch is set for 5:05pm.
