New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals bounced back from Friday's putrid performance as they found themselves on the better end of a 3-1 pitchers duel.
Mike Vicaro took the mound for New Jersey and gave the Jackals exactly what they were looking for and then some. Starting pitching for New Jersey has struggled to go deep in ball games lately and because of this the bullpen has put in a lot of innings of work. Knowing this all too well, the former reliever Vicaro went seven strong innings allowing just one earned run on a measly three hits. Vicaro also struck out five batters and walked none.
Vicaro's effort was so dominant that he had not allowed a base runner for the first 5 and 2/3 innings. Although both the perfect game and no hitter were lost in the sixth, Vicaro battled through the inning and made it out unscathed.
Not to be outdone, Mike McTamney was stellar for the Brockton Rox. He didn't allow a single run through four innings, a feat that very few opposing pitchers have been able to hold the Jackals to.
A run would finally be scored in the bottom fifth when right fielder Francisco Leandro singled to lead off the inning. Leandro would then steal second, putting himself into scoring position which was all that Jackal first baseman Clyde Williams needed. The clean-up batter ripped a 2-2 single to center, driving in Leandro. Williams finished the day 4-4 and now has a remarkable eight hits in his last nine at bats.
Brockton would finally answer back in the seventh. They loaded the bases with one out and Rox short stop Fredy De La Cruz capitalized on the situation, driving in left fielder Jeremy Coronado on a sacrifice fly. Although runns remained on base, Vicaro got out of the inning by striking out pinch hitter Justin Smucker.
In the bottom half of the inning the Jackals would score two, putting them ahead for good. Left fielder Jud Thigpen hit his second go ahead solo home run in as many days to lead off the inning. Williams would later come around to score from second on an RBI single by short stop Guillermo Reyes.
Vicaro earned the win and McTamney took the hard luck loss. Rusty Tucker picked up the save, becoming the first player in the Can-Am League to record 10 saves so far this season.
