Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - SS Anthony Granato went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs, while RF Joe Burke also went 3-for-4, as the Atlantic City Surf defeated the Brockton Rox, 4-2, in a Can-Am League matchup on Tuesday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium.
Atlantic City drew first blood with Granato's leadoff first-inning home run; Burke then doubled down the left-field line, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch by Brockton starter Santo Hernandez, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Surf.
Brockton responded with a run in the second on CF Josh Womack's RBI double. From there, neither team scored until the fifth, when Atlantic City RF Jason Hurst doubled, moved to third on a passed ball, and came home on another wild pitch. In the seventh, the Rox again narrowed the lead to one, 3-2, with RF Eugene Julien's RBI single, but the Surf added an insurance run in the eighth with Granato's leadoff solo home run, his eighth of the season.
Rory Shortell (8-3) picked up the victory for the Surf, limiting Brockton to one run on one hit in six innings of work, fanning one. Adam Cox made his first appearance since July 25, facing four batters in the sixth inning in relief of Shortell. Walker Whitley and Kyle George were effective out of the bullpen, limiting the Rox to no runs on two hits in two and two-thirds innings pitched. Despite the loss, Santo Hernandez (0-1) pitched a complete game for Brockton in his first start since joining the club.
Granato and Burke combined for six of the Surf's eight hits, with Hurst and 2B Brad Thoma registering the other two. Womack was the only Rox player to record a multiple-hit evening, going 2-for-2 and stealing four bases.
With the victory, Atlantic City moves into a tie for first place in the second half with the Quebec Capitales, who lost 10-2 at Sussex on the evening. With two weeks remaining in the season, the second-half championship race is tightening, as the Skyhawks' win puts them within one game of first place, while Worcester moves to within half a game of the Surf and Capitales with its 5-4 victory against New Jersey.
The two teams meet for the second rendezvous of the three-game set on Wednesday evening, with Atlantic City's J.C. Huguet (8-6) facing Brockton's Wayne Lundgren (8-3) at 7:05 p.m. on Wawa Wednesday.
