Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Atlantic City, NJ -- Light-hitting shortstop David Keesee went 4-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs, and the Worcester Tornadoes mustered just four hits as they were shut out by the Atlantic City Surf, 7-0, to conclude the first half at 24-23.
The Surf got on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning, using three singles off Tornadoes starter Reid Willett (2-5) to go up 1-0. They tacked on another run in the 5th on a leadoff solo homer by Keesee, just his fourth professional home run in over 700 at-bats. The game remained close until the bottom of the 7th inning when Joe Burke broke things open with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing three-run triple off Willett to make it 6-0. Ed Montague then singled home Burke to provide the final margin.
The Tornadoes failed to get anything going offensively all game long as Atlantic City starter Coogie Freedman (2-0), making his first start since the 2005 season, held the Tornadoes to just three singles in 5.2 shutout innings. Three relievers combined on 3.1 scoreless innings to complete the combined shutout.
Freedman (1-0) picked up the win and Willett (2-5) took the loss. The 11 hits allowed by Willett were the most given up in a game by a Tornadoes pitcher this season. The shutout was the third time the Tornadoes have been blanked this season, and the first time on the road. Worcester finished the first half in 5th place at 24-23. The Tornadoes will have Sunday off and then begin the second half at home on Monday night, when they welcome the North Shore Spirit to town for the first of a four-game series. Lefty Mike Meagher is scheduled to start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Spirit righty Matt Bishop, the league-leader in ERA (1.34). First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
