New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals got back to their winning ways just in time to close out the first half on a high note. The team enjoyed an incredible first half of the season. For the majority of the year, the Jackals were in first place, and they stayed in first place for long enough to clinch the first half championship a week before the break. However, three straight embarrassing losses to the Sussex Skyhawks, the last place team in the Can-Am League, had the Jackals fearing that the incredible first half would leave a bad taste in their mouth entering the second half.

The Jackals, thanks to Mike Vicaro and Clyde Williams, got back on their feet for the final game in the first half, defeating the Skyhawks 10-0.

In the past three games the Jackals had struggled in every way, especially starting pitching. Joe Calfapietra turned to his most reliable pitcher of late in Vicaro, and he did not disappoint. Vicaro dominated Sussex hitters, striking out six batters over six innings and not allowing a single run.

His counterpart, Jake Brooks, struggled in his 2007 debut going just 2.1 innings and giving up five earned runs.

The Jackals got off to a lead early in the game on an RBI double by first baseman Clyde Williams. Williams would continue his hot hitting in the third inning with a three run blast over the right field wall. Williams finished the game 2-6 with a homerun and four RBI.

Second baseman Joe Mihalics added to the inning by drawing a bases loaded walk, bringing in third baseman Wilton Veras. Mihalics also tacked on an RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Jackals would add a run in both the bottom of the fourth and the bottom seventh thanks in large part to misplays by Sussex. Right fielder Francisco Leandro scored one of his two runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and Joe Mihalics came around to score in the seventh thanks to a throwing error by Sussex first baseman Jabe Bergeron.

Francisco Leandro finished the night going 3-4 with two RBI and two walks. He reached base in all six oh his plate appearances.

Mike Vicaro took the win in impressive fashion. The win was his sixth win in as many games.

Jake Brooks suffered the loss for Sussex.
