Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA -- The Brockton Rox ended the first-half of play on Saturday night with a 14-3 loss to the North Shore Spirit before 4,217 at Campanelli Stadium. While RF Tony Gonzalez hit his first career HR and pitched a third of an inning of relief in his first pro pitching appearance, the Rox managed little offensively and fell victim to defensive and pitching shortcomings. Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to nine games in the loss. North Shore DH Josue Matos had five hits and four RBI in the win for the Spirit, who finished the first half with a 25-21 record. The Rox loss dropped them to 20-26.

North Shore sent the league -eader in wins to the hill, RHP Chris Farley. Farley got all the run support he needed in the second inning when the Spirit struck for three unearned runs against Rox starter RHP Gary Galvez. A Gonzalez error early in the inning opened a door for the Spirit, who took advantage with a two-run double by Matos and an RBI double off the bat of SS Jerson Perez. Matos and Perez had eight of North Shore's 15 hits in the game. Gonzalez ripped a Farley pitch over the right field wall for a solo HR in the fourth, as the Rox trailed 3-1.

Galvez ceded two more runs to the Spirit and was lifted after five. He took the loss to fall to 2-6 on the season. The Spirit scored again in the sixth and eighth to make it 7-1. While the Rox led off with three consecutive hits to open the eighth, they managed just a run to cut the deficit to 7-2. In the ninth, North Shore plated seven runs (all unearned) on six hits and a pair of Rox errors. Gonzalez, who pitched at Crichton College in Tennessee, was summoned to get the final out of the ninth, which he did but not before walking a pair of runners home. LF Jeremy Coronado, 2B Alex Nunez, and SS Fredy De La Cruz all had multi-hit games for Brockton in the loss.

The Rox open the second-half of the 2007 season on Monday in Atlantic City against the Surf. RHP John Kelly (4-1, 1.63 ERA) takes the ball for the Rox in the 7:05 PM affair.
