JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns will honor the Class 5A State Championship Baseball Team from Ponte Vedra High School in a ceremony before Saturday's Game on the field! The Sharks won the State Championship last month in Ft. Myers defeating Estero High School 6-2 in the Championship Game to win the title.

Also on Saturday the Suns will honor Ponte Vedra Senior Matt Deegan as the 2013 recipient of the Bragan Award. The Bragan Award is given to a North Florida high school senior baseball player who has exhibited outstanding skill on the baseball diamond and strong character and leadership off the field.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Right Handed Pitcher was 8-2 with a 1.25 while striking out 62 batters in 67.1 innings pitched on the season. Over his four years Deegan had a record of 19-9, an ERA of 2.40 and struck out 180 batters while only walking 67 and had a 4.4 GPA in the classroom. Deegan starred for the Ponte Vedra Sharks this year and will play college baseball at the College of Charleston. Deegan won the Player of the Year for St. John's County in his Junior and Senior season, as given by the St. Augustine Record, and was also an All First Coast Pitcher in his Junior and Senior seasons.

Ponte Vedra High Coach Tom Stanton had the following to say about Deegan: "Matt has been an anchor of our staff and one of the reasons we've been able to get to the Final Four three of the past four seasons, he is the ultimate leader, has had great stats every year and there are so many wonderful things I could say about him."

The 2013 Bragan Award will be presented to Deegan on Saturday, June 22, during a pre-game ceremony Bragan Field. Deegan is the sixth player to receive the Bragan Award, following Arlington Country Day graduate Javier Baez. The award is named in honor of the late Peter Bragan, Sr., who owned the Jacksonville Suns since 1984 until passing away in July of 2012 and made great contributions to the overall cultural and sports scene in Jacksonville, including high school and youth athletics.

The decision was finalized by longtime amateur baseball expert Richard Abis, UNF Recruiting Coordinator Judd Loveland, Suns General Manager Chris Peters and Suns President Peter D. Bragan, Jr. The award is modeled after a 1930's Nokona-brand left-handed fielder's glove that belonged to Bragan Sr. when he was playing semi-pro ball in Philadelphia. The original glove was used to cast a mold from which to make the awards.
