Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Anthony DeSclafani threw six scoreless innings in his Double-A debut and the Jacksonville Suns (2-0, 36-33) hit two solo home runs in a 2-0 win over the Huntsville Stars (0-2, 29-41) at Bragan Field.
DeSclafani (1-0), just up from High-A Jupiter, retired the last 13 hitters he faced and surrendered just two hits in his first start as a Sun, striking out five Stars and walking none.
"I hadn't seen him pitch before," said Suns manager Andy Barkett following the victory. "I was very impressed with the way he pounded the strike zone. He kept the ball down and mixed his pitches well. Six scoreless innings...not much else we can ask for."
Huntsville starter Ariel Pena (5-6) was almost as effective as DeSclafani, but served up two solo home runs that proved to be his undoing. Ryan Fisher broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a no-doubt solo shot to right field, his third of the season, and Danny Black added his second long ball in the sixth to give Jacksonville all the runs it would need.
"Any time you can pitching like we got tonight and hit a couple of solo homers, that's a manager's dream," Barkett said. "[Black] got the head out and so did Fisher."
The Suns bullpen continued to shine in the late innings as well. Arquimedes Caminero threw two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth and has now allowed just four earned runs over his past 18 outings. Grant Dayton followed by striking out the side in the ninth to earn his first save.
"Any time you get to the sixth and you know you can get to the ninth with the lead, you feel good about it," Barkett said. "It's a ...confident feeling for a manager."
Huntsville managed just four hits in the contest as the Suns began the second half of the 2013 campaign the same way they started the first half - with two consecutive victories.
Jacksonville goes for the series victory on Friday behind right-hander Jay Jackson (2-4, 2.91). The Suns will have a tough task as they go up against Huntsville righty Taylor Jungmann (7-6, 4.13), one of the more highly touted prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. E.T.
