Martinez, Braves Walkoff over Barons

PEARL, MS -- With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Jose Martinez delivered a walkoff single up the middle to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Birmingham Barons. The series continues with game three of the series at Trustmark Park Friday night.

Christian Marrero and Edward Salcedo drew a one-out walks to the start the bottom of the ninth for the M-Braves. Phil Gosselin entered the game as a pinch runner before Martinez drilled the game-winning drive up the middle. The walkoff was Mississippi's eighth walkoff victory this season.

Mississippi (2-0, 40-32) plated three runs on just five hits while Birmingham (0-2, 44-28) scored its two runs on eight hits. The M-Braves also committed one error in the game. Martinez had two hits on the night to lead the Braves offensively. For the Barons, Trayce Thompson had a three-hit night at the plate.

The M-Braves jumped on the board first. Edward Salcedo blasted a solo home run into the Bud Light Picnic Pavilion, giving the M-Braves an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. Martinez then singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Braeden Schlehuber followed with a RBI-single to center field, making it a 2-0 game.

Marcus Semien cut the M-Braves lead to 2-1 with a solo home run to left in the top of the fifth. It was his fifth long ball of the season.

Birmingham tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Thompson singled and Andy Wilkins reached on a fielder's choice error. Tyler Saladino followed with a walk to load the bases with two outs before Mike Blanke drew another walk to bring home Thompson.

The Barons loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth but Ryne Harper worked his way out of the jam, ending the frame with a strikeout. Harper (4-1) picked up the win, working an inning and a third. He walked two and struck out two. Taylor Thompson (3-1) took the loss for the Barons.

M-Braves lefty Ian Thomas (3-3, 2.43) toes the rubber in game three of this five-game series at Trustmark Park. He'll counter Barons right-hander Stephen McCray (6-5, 3.80). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
