(HAGERSTOWN, Md.) Stephen Souza's double to left center field scored Billy Burns from first base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Hagerstown Suns came from behind again to beat the Lexington Legends 5-4 Friday night. Hagerstown has taken the first three games in the series, and has come from behind in the seventh inning or later to win all three.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on Matt Duffy's solo home run, but Brett Newsome homered in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 1-1.
The Legends broke the tie with three runs in the top of the sixth. Duffy led off with a double and moved to third on a one-out single by Justin Gominsky. Jordan Scott walked, loading the bases. A wild pitch by Hagerstown starter Kylin Turnbull allowed Duffy to score, and on the play at home plate, Turnbull missed the throw from catcher Sam Palace, and Gominsky also scored, giving the Legends a 3-1 lead. Scott went to third on the play and later scored on Ryan McCurdy's sacrifice fly.
The Suns came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Newsome, a wild pitch by Legends starter Luis Cruz, a triple by Hendry Jimenez and another wild pitch, leaving the score at 4-3.
Hagerstown evened the score in the bottom of the eighth. Justin Miller led off with a single and stole second as Newsome struck out. After Jimenez struck out, Cutter Dykstra pinch-hit for Palace and hit a high bouncer to shortstop. Nolan Fontana fielded the ball and threw to first, but Dykstra was ruled safe at first and Miller scored from second on the play to tie the game at 4-4.
In the Hagerstown ninth, Legends reliever Dayan Diaz gave up singles to Brian Goodwin and Burns, putting runners at first and second with no outs. Diaz struck out Matt Skole and then picked Goodwin off second before Souza lined his game-winning hit to left center.
Colin Bates (3-2), who entered the game in the seventh inning, got the win. Diaz (4-3) took the loss.
The series continues Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
