Montgomery, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns stayed alive in the Southern League first half South Division race Wednesday evening as pitchers Justin Orenduff and Ramon Troncoso combined for a four-hit shutout, leading the Suns to a 4-0 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium.
With the win Jacksonville improved to 37-29 and combined with the Mississippi loss against Mobile the Suns moved to three games back of the first place Braves with four games remaining. Montgomery fell to 33-27 overall.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second inning when A.J. Ellis drove home Marshall McDougall for a 1-0 lead against Montgomery starter Derek Feldkamp.
Suns first baseman Alberto Concepcion smacked his fifth homerun of the season with one out in the fourth inning, a solo blast onto the railroad tracks past the leftfield wall that opened a 2-0 advantage.
Montgomery had trouble with Jacksonville starter Justin Orenduff throughout the night. The right-hander pitched six shutout innings, with only three hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
The Suns added another run in the seventh inning, starting with back-to-back singles from Alberto Concepcion and Juan Gonzalez. On the hit-and-run single from Gonzalez, Concepcion moved to third base. A.J. Ellis next rolled into a double play to score Concepcion and open a 3-0 lead.
Jacksonville took advantage of two Montgomery errors in the eighth for their fourth and final run. David Nicholson reached second base when Biscuits right fielder Shaun Cumberland dropped a line drive for his fourth error of the season. Xavier Paul next recorded an infield single, and on pitcher Evan Meek's throwing error toward first base Nicholson scored to finish the scoring at 4-0.
Suns starter Justin Orenduff improved to 2-2 in the win while Biscuits starter Derek Feldkamp fell to 1-5 in the loss. Suns reliever Ramon Troncoso pitched three shutout relief innings, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout for his first save.
The Suns and Biscuits meet for the second game of the series Thursday at 8:05 p.m. ET. Suns LH Eric Cyr is scheduled to become active off of the disabled list in time for Thursday's start and will face Biscuits RH Chris Mason.
