Braves Lose Fourth Straight
June 13, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
After taking the first two games of the last series in Birmingham, the M-Braves lost game three of that series on a walk-off homer and have struggled since. Tonight's loss is their fourth straight and their lead in the SL South division is down to three games with only four to play. The Braves fell to the BayBears, 5-3 in front of 6,469 fans at Trustmark Park Wednesday night. It was the largest crowd at Trustmark Park this season.
Three bloop-singles plated two runs and gave the BayBears the first lead of the series in the third inning. Ronnie Merrill led off with a broken-bat single to left and he came around to score on a soft line drive to left by Emilio Bonaficio. Bonaficio came in to score on an easy pop to right that a diving Matt Esquivel couldn't come up with.
Mississippi wouldn't go down without a fight as they came back in the fourth. Brandon Jones led off the inning with a double and Matt Esquivel doubled him home. Esquivel then came in to score when Van Pope got an infield single to short. After four, the score was tied at two.
Just as the M-Braves tied the score, Mobile put a three-spot on the board to go back on top. With two outs in the fifth, Mobile got three runs thanks to three singles, a walk, and an error. After five, the BayBears led 5-2.
Carl Loadenthal led off the eighth with a single to right and stole second to get into scoring position. He moved to third on a chopper by Matt Esquivel and scored on an infield single by Diory Hernandez. It was as close as the M-Braves would get.
Francisley Bueno gave up five runs on nine hits through six innings and fell to 2-3 on the year. Charlie Morton threw two shutout innings. Zach Schreiber threw one shutout inning.
Greg Smith gave up two runs on six hits through six innings of work and improved to 3-2 on the season. Osbeck Castillo gave up one run on one hit through 1.2 innings. Mark Rosen threw 1.1 scoreless to register his second save of the year.
The M-Braves and the BayBears face off in game two of this five-game set tomorrow night at 7:05 at Trustmark Park. Mississippi is scheduled to send lefty Matt Harrison to the hill in search of his sixth win while Mobile will counter with righty Chris Kinsey. Kinsey will be looking for his fourth win of '07.
