PEARL, MS - The BayBears opened their final series of the first half with a win Wednesday, beating the Braves 5-3. Greg Smith (3-2) was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs in six innings for his third victory. Mississippi starter Francisley Bueno (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, three earned in six innings.
The BayBears scored twice in the third inning, on RBI singles by Justin Upton and Emilio Bonifacio. Mississippi tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double by Matt Esquivel and an RBI single by Van Pope. The BayBears had a three run sixth inning, with RBI hits from Carlos Gonzalez and Josh Ford, and an error by Mississippi catcher Clint Sammons all leading to runs.
An eighth inning infield single by Diory Hernandez gave the Braves their third run, but Mark Rosen got the final four outs of the game for his fourth save. The BayBears have sealed a winning record in the first half, with a 35-31 mark with four games remaining.
