Suns Take Finale from Smokies

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (50-45, 15-10) overcame a 4-0 first inning deficit for a 7-5 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (44-51, 12-13) in front of 4,844 Sunday evening at the Baseball Grounds of Jacks onville.

Suns reliever Jay Voss (1-0) picked up the victory after dealing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit. Marco Mateo (2-6) fell in the loss after giving up three runs, one earned, over one and one-thirds innings. Closer Matt Peterson (20) increased his league-best save total with a perfect ninth inning.

Tennessee jumped into the lead in the first inning against Suns starter Graham Taylor with four runs. Nathan Samson scored on a double play ground ball to open a 1-0 score. Following back-to-back two out singles, Blake Lalli connected for a homerun to right field while extending the lead to 4-0.

Jacksonville chipped away at the lead in the third inning. Two walks and a single against Tennessee starter Casey Coleman loaded the bases for Lee Mitchell, who belted a double to left-centerfield to score all three runners for a 4-3 score.

The Suns tied the game in the fourth inning on a one-out single to centerfield from Mike Stanton to drive in Ryan Klosterman for a 4-4 score.

Tennessee snatched the lead back in the fifth inning, Tyler Colvin scored on a two-out single from Tony Thomas for a 5-4 Smokies lead.

Jacksonville took the lead for good in the sixth inning, scoring three runs against Mateo. Lorenzo Scott came in to score on an error by first baseman Blake Lalli to tie the game 5-5. Later, singles from Scott Cousins and Kevin Randel drove in runs to open a 7-5 lead.
