MOBILE, Ala. - Barry Enright tossed seven solid innings as the BayBears whipped the Birmingham Barons in the rubber game of their five-game series, 6-2 on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The BayBears (50-44, 13-11), already the only team to win a series against the Barons (62-32, 14-11) this season, become the first team to take two sets from the First Half South Division Champions.
Enright (6-6) got some run support early as Matt Long (1-2) hit Pedro Ciriaco to start the bottom of the first. Ciriaco took second on a single by Chris Rahl and third on a passed ball. With two outs, Cyle Hankerd squibbed a grounder to first that Christian Marrero gloved, but Long missed first base which allowed Ciriaco to score.
Birmingham quickly knotted the score in the second with Dayan Viciedo coming home after a throw towards third base from Hankerd took a bad hop over the bag and into the Birmingham dugout.
Yunesky Sanchez, back on the field for the first time since June 26, helped the BayBears take the lead back by walking and scoring all the way from first on Pete Clifford's double to left-center. Clifford came home on a two-out knock by Rahl to make it 3-1.
In the third, the BayBears got two more on Long with Ricardo Sosa starting the frame with an infield single. Hankerd doubled on a misjudged pop up by Lee Cruz in left field. Sosa came home on Matt Tupman's groundout while Sanchez doubled Hankerd to the plate. The BayBears got another tally in the sixth as Rahl tripled and scored on a throwing error by Jared Price.
Enright kept the BayBears steady as he scattered six singles while striking out three. Kyler Newby gave up a run in the eighth while Daniel Stange tossed a scoreless ninth.
The Mobile BayBears have sent nearly 100 players to the major leagues. They start a six-game set at AT&T Field on Tuesday night at 6:15 central time with Wes Roemer (5-5, 3.30) getting the start against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The BayBears are back home on Monday, July 27 to host Ryne Sandberg and the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
