Worcester Bravehearts News Release
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts can relax knowing they have clinched first place in the FCBL Western Division, but the Pittsfield Suns are still fighting for a playoff spot.
As a result, the Suns rallied for five runs in the sixth innings to pick up a crucial 9-7 victory against the Bravehearts on Aug. 7 at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, Mass.
Bravehearts reliever David Montiverdi took the ball in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and his team leading 5-4, but the Worcester, Mass., native gave up an RBI single to left fielder Michael Valentin Jr. followed by a couple of 2-RBI singles from right fielder Gary Tesch and catcher Dan Pallazo.
After being charged with seven earned runs on nine hits, Bravehearts starter Joe Saia took the loss and dropped to 0-3 since he allowed the eventual winning run to reach in the sixth inning.
Worcester added two runs in the eight inning on singles from designated hitter Dylan Harris and first baseman Tyler McVicar, but it was not enough to make up the deficit. However, McVicar had a season-best performance at the plate with four hits and two RBI.
Third baseman Mark DeYoung helped the Bravehearts tie the game in the fifth inning with an RBI triple, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Jordan Berry. Shortstop Darian Ramage added three hits in the game, as the Bravehearts combined for 12 hits as a team.
Despite giving up three runs on three hits in relief, Suns pitcher Tyler Lamonda got the win in three innings pitched. Merrimack College sophomore Nate Spielvogel struck out the side in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
The 31-22 Bravehearts will conclude their regular season when they face the Nashua Silver Knights at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H.
