Five Run Sixth Puts Suns on Top

The Pittsfield Suns were victorious over Worcester, beating the Bravehearts 9-7 Thursday evening at Wahconah Park. The win brings the Suns that much closer to the FCBL Playoff with only two games left in the regular season.

Worcester scored a run in the first inning to put the Suns in an early 1-0 hole, but the Suns answered in the bottom of the frame scoring three runs to take the lead. Tyler Bell singled and stole second before Jeff McGarry would walk to put two runners on for Steve Dill who would single to score Pittsfield's first run. Derek Gardella and Dan Donahue would follow with back-to-back RBI singles, giving the Suns a 3-1 advantage.

The Bravehearts would cut the lead by one in the third, but Pittsfield's Bell tripled in the bottom of the inning and would score on a base hit by Dan Palazzo, for a 4-2 Suns lead.

Things got interesting from there as Worcester plated two runs to tie the game in fifth, and would get another run in sixth to overtake the lead, 5-4.

Pittsfield was relentless in its' quest for victory though, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to reclaim the lead. A lead off walk to Steve Dill and back-to-back singles from Gardella and Donahue would load the bases for Michael Valentin Jr. who would also single to score Dill from third. The Suns would have three additional RBI- singles in the inning by Gary Tesch, Palazzo and McGarry, to total five runs and increase their lead to 9-5.

Worcester would score an additional two runs in the eighth inning, but their fate was sealed, eventually losing to Pittsfield, 9-7.

Tyler Lamonda would earn his first victory of the season for the Suns, after coming in to relieve starter Justin Finan in the sixth. Lamonda pitched three innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs, three walks and striking out two. Nate Spielvogel recorded his second save on the year, and Worcester's Joe Saia would be charged with the loss.

The Suns close out the regular season Friday night at Wahconah Park. A double header against the North Shore Navigators is scheduled. Gates will open at 4:30 PM. Game one will begin at 5 PM, with game two taking place approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
