Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns nearly pulled off a huge comeback from down eight runs but came just short as they fell to the Lakewood BlueClaws 10-9 on Wednesday night.

The game looked in hand for the BlueClaws after the top of the seventh. Lakewood scored four runs off a two-run home run by catcher Sebastian Valle off Colton Willems and later a two-run single by left fielder Anthony Hewitt off Shane Erb to score Adam Buschini and Jeremy Barnes. These hits put the BlueClaws up 10-2.

The Suns started their comeback in the bottom of the seventh. After Eury Perez and Jeff Kobernus singled, shortstop Francisco Soriano doubled to score Perez. Third baseman Steven Souza followed with a two-run double off Siulman Lebron to score Kobernus and Soriano to cut the Lakewood lead to 10-5.

The next inning, Souza got another big hit with a two-run triple to score Sandy Leon and Kobernus to make the score 10-7 Lakewood.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Suns got their first four batters to reach, capped by a Leon single against Jordan Ellis to score Destin Hood. J.P. Ramirez would score on the next batter as Perez grounded into a double play. The Suns got the score to 10-9, but they could not complete the comeback.

Jarred Cosart (2-0) picks up the win for the BlueClaws with 5.1 innings pitched, striking out seven and allowing two runs. Lebron allowed three runs in his one inning of work. Ellis got the save pitching in the ninth, allowing two runs but holding the three-run lead.

Josh Smoker (0-2) gets the loss after 4 1/3 innings pitched, giving up five runs, four of them earned, and striking out five. Willems was charged with five runs in two-and-a-third. Shane Erb pitched 2.1 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts.

Souza ended going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Kobernus increased his hit-streak to five games with a 2-for-6 night including three runs.

The Suns fall to 2-5 and the BlueClaws go to 4-3. The two teams will finish the series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 6:00 p.m.
