Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - The Hickory Crawdads scored four straight runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but fell just short, 5-4, against the Asheville Tourists before 1,037 fans at Historic McCormick Field on Wednesday night. RF Jared Prince paced the 'Dads offense, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a season-high three doubles, three RBIs, one run scored and one hit-by-pitch.
The Tourists (5-2) got out to a 5-0 lead with five runs through the first 4.2 frames against LHP Robbie Ross (1-1, 4.66). RHP Trevor Hurley took over for the Crawdads in the bottom of the fifth and recorded a strikeout to end the inning. He pitched a total of 2.1 perfect innings with five strikeouts to keep Asheville's offense in check.
The Crawdads (3-4) started their attempted come back with a tally in the top of the sixth inning. RF Jared Prince doubled to get on, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and came in on a sacrifice fly by 1B Mike Ortiz, who registered the RBI.
Hickory pulled within one run of tying the game with a three-run, two out rally in the top of the 7th inning. With two down and the bases empty, C Vinny DiFazio drew one of his three walks on the night to keep the inning going. CF Miguel Velazquez singled and 3B Matt West walked to load the bases. Prince promptly unloaded the bases with a drive off the right-center wall, scoring everyone with a three-run double to make it just a 5-4 Asheville lead.
After Hurley pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh and RHP Josh Lueke struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, the 'Dads got the potential game-tying run as close as third base in the top of the ninth before coming up just short against Tourists closer RHP Charles Ruiz, who got out of the inning with a strikeout and closed the 5-4 win for Asheville.
Tourists starter RHP Dan Perkins (1-1, 5.59) logged five scoreless innings to earn the win and Ruiz picked up the save, while Ross was tagged with the loss for Hickory.
