Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - Chris Heston baffled Savannah hitters through seven innings as the Augusta GreenJackets picked up their third straight win over the Sand Gnats. Augusta's 1-0 win is also their second shutout of the four-game series with the Sand Gnats.
Heston (1-0) fired seven innings of two-hit, shutout ball without any walks. He hit one batter and struck out four in his first victory of the season. Heston allowed just one runner to second base all night long, inducing groundballs and infield pop-ups to fool the Sand Gnats.
In the third inning, GreenJackets catcher Hector Sanchez doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The throw from Savannah catcher Kai Gronauer to third was wide of the base to allow Sanchez to score the game's only run on the throwing error.
As good as Heston was, Sand Gnats starter Jimmy Fuller was just as solid. Fuller (0-1) threw eight innings and allowed just one run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts - a hard-luck loser.
Savannah's best chances came in the fifth when the Gnats put two runners on with two outs. Rylan Sandoval tapped out to the mound to end the inning. With one out in the eighth, Kai Gronauer greeted reliever Jose Casilla with a drive down the left field line that barely missed leaving the park. With Gronauer aboard at second, Casilla fanned back-to-back hitters to end the threat.
In the ninth, Rafael Fernandez singled with one out but with two strikes to Wilmer Flores, Fernandez was caught stealing second on a fine throw by Sanchez. On the next pitch, Flores flew out to right field to end the game and give Jason Jarvis his second save of the season.
Through 27 innings of this series, the Sand Gnats haven't led once. The GreenJackets will go for the series sweep in their second straight series with Jorge Bucardo (0-0, 2.25) taking the ball for Augusta against Savannah's Mark Cohoon (1-0, 0.00) First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
