Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (6-4), fresh off back-to-back blowouts of the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-4), outlasted the home team on Sunday with a 9-7 victory in 12-innings.
The Suns got off to a hot start again on Sunday, with four runs in the top of the first inning. Sean Nicol, Steven Souza, Justin Bloxom and Destin Hood all reached safely and scored in the frame for Hagerstown.
The Shorebirds started chipping away at the Suns lead in the bottom of the second inning as third baseman Tyler Kolodny hit his fifth home run of the season off Suns starter Daniel Rosenbaum (1-0).
The solo home run was the only run surrendered by Rosenbaum in the game. The left-hander tossed six innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. The one run was the first he has allowed in three starts this season.
The Hagerstown bullpen was less effective than Rosenbaum and relievers Wanel Vasquez and Patrick Arnold each allowed two runs in just one inning of work.
Vasquez pitched in the bottom of the seventh inning and allowed two runs on three hits, bringing the score to 4-3. The Suns responded well, however, as JP Ramirez hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot driving in Hood, to extend the Suns lead to 6-3.
Arnold's inning of work came in the eighth, and the righthander surrendered a two-run home run to Kolodny, giving the Delmarva third-baseman a SAL best six home runs.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Suns reliever Dean Weaver entered the game, and allowed Tyler Stampone to reach on a single to right field. Pinch-runner JT Baxter was then balked to second base and eventually reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Dalles.
With one away, Weaver got Garabez Rosa to chop a ground ball back to the mound, but after Weaver checked the runner at third base and threw to first, Baxter broke for the plate. The Suns recorded the out at first, but the return throw to catcher Sandy Leon was not in time and the game was tied at 6-6.
It stayed 6-6 until Hagerstown broke through for three runs in the top of the 12th inning on three hits. The first run came on a single by Ramirez to left field, driving in Souza from second base.
Shane Erb (1-0) got the win after pitching two innings and allowing just one run for Hagerstown. Jordan Brandhorst (0-1) allowed the three runs in the 12th for Delmarva and took the loss.
The Suns and Shorebirds will finish their four-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
