JACKSON, Tenn. â The Suns weathered three home runs against them in a 4-3 victory over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx in front of 2,195 fans Tuesday at Pringles Park.
Suns starter Brian Pilkington (3-0) remained undefeated, scattering three solo home runs by Aron Weston, Jason Dubois and Mike Dzurilla. The Diamond Jaxx (61-71 overall, 27-35 second half) smacked eight hits off Pilkington, but he walked none and struck out seven to earn the win.
The Suns were boosted by three Diamond Jaxx errors. In the second, the Suns tied the game at 1-1 on Edwin Bellorin's single which moved Nick Theodorou to third. Theodorou scored on the play as Weston, the left fielder, bobbled the relay throw.
Reggie Abercrombie doubled home Franklin Gutierrez in the third inning, giving the Suns a 2-1 advantage. Derek Michaelis singled to right to score Gutierrez in the fifth, but a relay throw to get Michaelis at second deflected off shortstop Donnie Hood's glove into the outfield which allowed Abercrombie to score off West Tenn starter Sergio Mitre. Mitre (7-9) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs â two earned â but garnered the loss.
Brian Steffek pitched two scoreless innings in relief and ended the eighth by snagging a sharply hit grounder by Dzurilla to start an inning-ending double play. Jason Frasor pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his all-time record 15th consecutive save for the Suns (63-70, 32-32).
The Suns' win moved them to within 2½ games of first place Tennessee and Carolina with six games remaining for Jacksonville. The Smokies beat Carolina, 7-4, on Tuesday.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (7-7, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to face Diamond Jaxx righty Mike Nannini (10-8, 3.77) at 7:05 p.m. CT at Pringles Park. Jackson and Nannini, respectively, are the top two Southern League leaders in strikeouts.
