Huntsville Stars News Release

Huntsville, AL – Round one to the Barons. In the race for a second-half title, Huntsville now has little margin for error. The Stars must join the fight Tuesday, or Birmingham will likely have three home games in the Southern League Western Division Championship Series. The Barons knocked out 11 hits in a 7-1 win over Huntsville on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (33-30) have lost five of six games to fall 3½ games out of first, their largest deficit all season.

With the help of a balk and an error, the Barons took a 2-0 lead in the second. Birmingham used a walk and two singles to make it 3-0 in the third. Another error led to an unearned run in the fifth and a 4-0 Birmingham lead. The Stars broke up the shutout on Brandon Gemoll's sixth-inning, run-scoring single, but the Barons' bullpen took over from there.

While Birmingham relievers offered 3 2/3 scoreless innings, the Barons' offense sealed the game. In the seventh, Jeremy Reed singled home Danny Sandoval, who had singled and stolen second. Carlos Maldonado capped the scoring with an eighth-inning two-run homerun to make it 7-1, Barons.

Corwin Malone (3-2) picked up his first Southern League win since April after a stint on the disabled list with elbow soreness and rehab at Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League. Malone allowed one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Greg Bruso (0-1) suffered the loss in his Stars debut, permitting three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks while fanning two.

The series resumes with game two Tuesday night at Joe Davis Stadium, when Huntsville righty Pedro Liriano (9-12, 3.78) meets Barons right-hander Tetsu Yofu (9-8, 3.64). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
