Hagerstown Suns News Release
Hagerstown, MD- On Sunday night, in the game three finale to cap a seven-game homestand, the Hagerstown Suns (46-34, 6-4) knocked off the Lexington Legends (38-42, 3-7) by a score of 8-2 at Municipal Stadium. Suns LHP Matt Grace (9-5), the winning pitcher of record, tossed 7.0 innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits without walking a single batter, while striking out five.
Lexington RHP Ruben Alaniz (5-6), the losing pitcher, threw 5.1 frames and surrendered four earned runs on seven hits amidst walking five and fanning two.
Neither club managed to produce a run until the top of the 5th inning when DH Telvin Nash smashed a single into center field that rolled up the arm of CF Bryce Harper, allowing Nash to take second base. Nash would score on an RBI groundout to second base by 1B Tyler Burnett to give the Legends a 1-0 advantage.
Hagerstown grabbed the lead in the last of the 5th frame as C Cole Leonida lashed a single through the left side and LF Wade Moore yanked a hard grounder into right field. 2B Blake Kelso wrapped an RBI groundout to bring in Leonida. With the bases loaded, SS Jason Martinson garnered an RBI base-on-balls to earn the Suns a 2-1 lead.
Legends RHP Juan Minaya, who relieved Alaniz, tossed 2.2 innings and allowed four runs, three earned on six hits, while walking one and striking out five.
The Suns tacked on four more runs in the 6th stanza on another pair of back-to-back singles from Leonida and Moore, before 3B Sean Nicol went the other way with a two-RBI double to clear the bases. Harper then blasted a ground-rule double that skipped off the left field warning track and over the wall to plate Nicol. DH David Freitas, who walked, scored on an errant throw from 3B Enrique Hernandez to give Hagerstown a 6-1 lead.
Lexington tallied one run in the 7th inning on a throw from Grace towards second base intended to check on Hernandez, which skipped back up the middle to score Hernandez, who singled to get on board.
Hagerstown produced two runs in the 8th frame on an RBI double that cleared LF Bryce Lane off the lumber of Freitas before SS Jason Martinson sprayed an RBI single to center field.
RHP Ben Graham struck out the side in the 8th inning before RHP Shane McCatty induced a game-ending line drive double play off the bat of CF Emilio King.
The Suns will be hosted by the Lakewood BlueClaws for a 7:05pm first pitch on Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. Broadcast coverage on the Hagerstown Suns Baseball Network will begin with a 6:50pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show.
