GREENVILLE, SC - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, scored five combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings to claim the 7-4 victory against the Greenville Drive, before 5,720 fans at Fluor Field in Greenville on Sunday night.
The Drive (45-36, 7-4) took an early lead with a pair of runs against RHP Nick McBride in the bottom of the first. With two on and two down, C Christian Vazquez plated 2B Sean Coyle with an RBI single, while also advancing 1B Drew Hedman to third base. DH Michael Almanzar chopped a double inside the right field line, scoring Hedman and putting the Drive in the early 2-0 lead.
After Greenville plated a third run in the bottom of the second, the Crawdads (46-33, 6-5) began to chip away against RHP Keith Couch. With one away, LF Jonathan Roof sparked the offense with a base hit, before advancing to second on a ground out. 2B Odubel Herrera ripped a grounder inside the first base line for an RBI single, bringing in Roof from second to make it 3-1.
McBride dealt a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, and the Crawdads continued to edge closer in the top of the fourth. 1B Andrew Clark led off with a double to right field, before moving to third base on RF Josh Richmond's single one out later. CF Jake Skole then drove a sacrifice fly to deep center field, plating Clark to bring the 'Dads within one run, 3-2.
Greenville had a quick answer though, moving back in front by multiple runs when SS Xander Bogaerts led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, stretching the lead to 4-2.
However, the Crawdads rallied in the seventh to erase the deficit and take their first lead of the game against RHP Tyler Lockwood (L, 4-5). Roof doubled to start the inning and took third on a single by SS Jurickson Profar. Roof was picked off, but Herrera belted a double to left field scoring Profar all the way from first base. DH Tomas Telis followed with an RBI double of his own, bringing in Herrera to tie the game. After Clark was hit by a pitch, Telis stole his way to third base, putting runners at the corners with one out. 3B Christian Villanueva came through with a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Telis to put Hickory in the 5-4 lead.
Hickory moved further in front with two more tallies against RHP Garrett Rau in the eighth inning. RF Josh Richmond walked to start the inning and moved to second on a Skole base hit. C Yefry Castillo laid down a sacrifice bunt that Rau fielded but misfired to first base, enabling Castillo to reach safely while Richmond raced home and Skole took third on the miscue. Skole later scored on a wild pitch from Rau, giving the 'Dads some insurance on the scoreboard, 7-4.
LHP Jimmy Reyes tossed a second scoreless frame in the bottom of the eighth, before giving way to RHP Joe Van Meter (S, 4) for the bottom of the ninth. Van Meter retired the first two batters he faced, but Greenville attempted a two-out rally, loading the bases on two walks and a single. Van Meter, though, induced a game-ending pop up from Hedman, escaping the jam and closing the 7-4 win for Hickory. RHP Colby Killian (W, 6-2) logged two scoreless middle relief innings in the fifth and sixth, and earned the victory for the 'Dads.
