BlueClaws Top Shorebirds 10-5 in Finale

Salisbury, Md. - The Lakewood BlueClaws (39-40, 6-5) used seven unanswered runs over the first two innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (40-41, 5-6) 10-5 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday night in front of 7,796 fans.

In the first inning, Alan Schoenberger reached third on a slow roller towards the second base bag that Garabez Rosa threw away for a two-base error. Then, Geancarlo Mendez grounded to third to score Schoenberger. Domingo Santana and Anthony Hewitt hit back-to-back singles. Then, Miguel Alvarez hit a hard one hopper that hit off the chest of Mike Flacco and kicked into foul ground, allowing Santana to score.

Lakewood added five runs in the sixth inning to build a 7-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Mendez smoked a hard grounder down the left field line to score all three runners. Later in the inning, Anthony Hewitt hit a two-run homer.

The Shorebirds fought back in the bottom of the second. Mike Flacco, Jeremy Nowak and Michael Ohlman hit singles to load the bases. Then, Adam Gaylord hit a double to the wall in left-center field to plate two runs. Two batters later, Michael Mooney hit a line drive up the middle to score two more runs to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Lakewood added a run in the fourth to increase the lead to 8-5. Mendez, who finished with five RBIs, singled home Schoenberger.

The Shorebirds cut the deficit to three runs in the sixth inning. Mike Flacco doubled to left-center to open the frame. After two straight walks, Rosa hit into a double play that scored Flacco.

Lakewood added two runs in the eighth to close out the Shorebirds.

Lakewood starter David Buchanan earned the win over six innings. Shorebirds starter Jacob Pettit was pinned with the loss in 3.1 innings.

Shorebirds reliever Tim Adleman entered in the fourth inning and allowed just five hits over 4.2 innings. D.J. Ferguson tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

The Shorebirds open a seven-game road swing in Hickory, N.C. on Monday, July 4 against the Hickory Crawdads.
