Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The second-half offensive woes continued for the Augusta GreenJackets in a 7-1 loss to the Savannah Sand Gnats in front of 4,325 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Sunday night. Savannah earned their second three-game sweep over the GreenJackets this season with the win and the Gnats are now 12-2 this season against the GreenJackets.
Justin Schumer was roughed up early and often - victimized by four GreenJackets defensive errors within the game's first three innings. After Schumer walked the bases full with one out in the first, he induced a grounder to Carlos Willoughby at second. Willoughby lost the ball trying to tag the runner in motion from first to second, allowing two runs to score and giving Savannah a 2-0 edge. They doubled the lead to 4-0 later in the inning on Sam Honeck's two-run double.
The struggles for Schumer continued in the second as the Sand Gnats sent eight hitters to the plate for the second inning in a row. Back-to-back singles opened the inning and with runners at second and third, a Raynor Campbell throwing error allowed two to score as Savannah jumped out to a six-run lead. With runners at the corners and two outs, Aderlin Rodriguez hit a grounder to third that Adam Duvall scooped and fired to second. Willoughby dropped the throw to allow the Gnats to score their seventh run of the game on a play that chased Schumer.
Schumer (3-4) allowed seven runs, but just two earned, in his shortest start of the year. He fired 1.2 innings and allowed four hits while walking four and striking out two in his second straight loss.
Angel Cuan was solid for Savannah in his six inning stint, retiring 12 of the first 13 hitters he faced. The lone run he surrendered came in the sixth when Adam Duvall's sacrifice fly put the GreenJackets on the board. The flyout cut Savannah's lead to 7-1 and it gave Duvall his 60th RBI of the year and seventh in the second half.
Cuan (6-1) got his first win as a starter in his six innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and striking out a season-best seven. Adam Kolarek retired nine of the 11 hitters he faced over the final three innings, striking out two to earn his first save of the season.
The GreenJackets hit the road for the July 4th holiday, opening a three-game series in Charleston against the RiverDogs. Gaspar Santiago (2-3, 4.66) will get the holiday start for Augusta while the RiverDogs counter with Steve Evarts (0-1, 5.23) in a battle of lefties. First pitch will come at 6:35 p.m. from Charleston with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:20, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
