Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns out-slugged the 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, 13-8, before 532 fans at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Crawdads (72-53, 32-35) got out to a quick start with three runs in the first two innings. LF Jake Skole led off the top of the first with a triple against rehabbing Major League LHP Doug Slaten. Skole quickly came in when C Adrian Nieto misfired a pick off attempt into left field, putting the 'Dads ahead, 1-0.
Hickory tripled the early advantage on a two-run single by 2B Odubel Herrera in the top of the second against LHP Matt Grace (W, 12-6), but Hagerstown came racing back in the bottom of the inning against RHP Luke Jackson (L, 4-5). With runners at the corners and no outs, a sacrifice fly by 3B Justino Cuevas got the Suns (71-56, 31-26) on the board. One out later, an error on a missed catch by Herrera in shallow right field allowed the inning to continue, leading to a two-run base hit by CF Chris Curran to tie the game, 3-3.
The Suns charged in front with two tallies in the third, before opening up an 8-3 lead with a bases-loaded, three-run double by C Adrian Nieto in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI single by RF Josh Richmond in the top of the fifth brought the 'Dads within four runs, 8-4, while RHP Andrew Doyle kept the Suns off the board in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Hagerstown, though, opened up a 10-4 lead with a solo home run by Nieto in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh against Doyle. The Crawdads chipped away with a sacrifice fly by 1B Jhonny Gomez in the top of the eighth, but the Suns plated three more in the bottom of the inning. Cuevas drove in another run with an RBI single, before a two-run double by DH Michael Taylor later in the inning further stretched the Suns lead to 13-5.
Hickory refused to go down quietly, attempting a ninth-inning comeback against former-Crawdads RHP Sam Brown. With two outs and the bases empty, 3B Christian Villanueva kept the game going with a base hit. RF Alejandro Selen followed by getting hit by a pitch, before Richmond drove in Villanueva with an RBI double off the center field wall. SS Jonathan Roof and C Kellin Deglan worked consecutive walks, forcing in another run and cutting the deficit to 13-7. With the bases loaded and 1B Jhonny Gomez at the plate, Brown unleashed a wild pitch that scored Richmond from third base, but then battled back to strike out Gomez and close the 13-8 win for Hagerstown.
