Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads topped Major League RHP Stephen Strasburg and the Hagerstown Suns, 3-1, before 1,652 fans at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown on Monday night.
The Crawdads (72-52, 32-24) struck right away against Strasburg (L, 0-1), who made a rehab start, and the Suns in the top of the first inning. SS Jurickson Profar sparked the offense by being hit by a pitch. Profar stole his way to second base, before racing home on an RBI single by DH Tomas Telis one out later, putting Hickory in front, 1-0.
LHP Will Lamb (W, 1-0) made the start for the Crawdads and no-hit the Suns (70-56, 30-26) through his first four innings. Hagerstown broke up the no-hitter with a double from SS Jason Martinson to start the bottom of the fifth, but Lamb got out of the inning unscathed for his fifth, and final, scoreless frame.
The 'Dads stretched the lead with an unearned run against Strasburg in the third inning. 2B Odubel Herrera singled his way on and quickly stole second base. One out later, Herrera raced in when SS Jason Martinson overthrew first base on grounder by 3B Christian Villanueva, making it 2-0.
Hickory added a third run in the fourth inning against RHP Shane McCatty. 1B Alejandro Selen ripped McCatty's first pitch inside the left-field line for a lead-off double, before RF Josh Richmond worked a walk. After a double steal and a strikeout, LF Jonathan Roof brought in Selen with a sacrifice fly, giving the 'Dads the 3-0 advantage.
The Suns got on the board with a solo homer by 2B Adrian Sanchez against RHP Roman Mendez in the bottom of the sixth. Mendez kept Hagerstown from coming closer through the remainder of his two-inning relief outing, before RHP Ben Rowen tossed a scoreless eighth and RHP Francisco Mendoza (S, 4) got out of a jam in the ninth to close the 3-1 win for Hickory.
