Suns finish regular season with sweep of Stars

Huntsville, Ala. - Mike Stanton belted two tape measure homeruns, including the go-ahead grand slam homerun in the seventh inning, while leading the Jacksonville Suns (82-58, 47-23) to a series sweep of t he Huntsville Stars (63-75, 25-44) with a 9-5 victory in front of 1,037 Monday at Joe Davis Stadium.

Suns reliever Jay Voss (3-0) picked up the victory, giving up two unearned runs in one inning of work. Stars reliever Zach Braddock (2-1) fell in the loss, giving up the seventh inning grand slam. Matt Peterson (37) set a new Southern League single-season record for saves, entering the game with the tying run on deck in the eighth inning.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second inning as Matt Dominguez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 score. The Suns extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning as Mike Stanton crushed a two-run homerun that hit the American flag flying deep past the left field wall, his 15th Double-A homerun.

Huntsville tied the game in the fifth inning against Suns starter Elih Villanueva, who had=2 0been perfect through the first four innings. J.R. Hopf singled home two runs before Freddy Parejo knocked in another run with a hit for a 3-3 score.

The Stars gained the lead in the sixth inning as Hopf drove in another run on a fielder's choice for a 4-3 lead. Voss later dealt a wild pitch to score Chuckie Caufield for a 5-3 Stars advantage.

Jacksonville took the lead for good in the seventh inning as Mike Stanton hit a two-out, grand slam homerun to deep left-centerfield for a 7-5 lead. The homerun was Stanton's 16th in Double-A and 28th of the season overall.

The Suns added two more runs in the eighth inning on a Chris Hatcher double and an error by Stars shortstop Yohannis Perez for a 9-5 score.
