MOBILE, Ala. - A back-and-forth finale on Labor Day at Hank Aaron Stadium ended with an assaulting three-run homer from Matt Spring in the ninth inning, propelling the Montgomery Biscuits past the BayBears 7-5.
Jordan Norberto (0-2) had been asked to get three outs to preserve a lead that the BayBears (66-74, 29-41) had just taken in the bottom of the eighth and came just one strike short.
Cody Cipriano coaxed a walk with one out while Jason Perry singled. J.T. Hall then bounced into a fielder's choice to set up Spring with two away, and he hammered a 3-2 fastball from Norberto well beyond the wall in left to put the Biscuits (65-74, 32-37) on top.
Matt Gorgen (3-1) shut it down for Montgomery in the ninth after recording the final out in the eighth. Ryan Reid was lit up in the bottom of the eighth to give the BayBears a 5-4 advantage. Ricardo Sosa singled and scored on a sac fly by Pete Clifford while Chris Rahl's RBI double gave the BayBears their first lead of the night.
Barry Enright started for the BayBears and tossed six frames while surrendering three runs on five hits. He gave up a pair of dingers in the contest as Matt Fields jacked a two-run tater in the first inning. Hall nailed the first of his two solo shots in the fifth.
It was 3-3 when Enright left the ballgame as the BayBears picked up a tally in the second against Brian Baker with Matt Tupman singling home Sosa. An infield hit by Mark Hallberg produced a run in the third as Evan Frey was able to touch home all the way from second.
Leyson Septimo replaced Enright in the seventh and uncorked another home run to Hall which put the Biscuits in front 4-3. Roque Mercedes was in line for the victory after the BayBears' eighth-inning rally as he threw up a zero in the top of the eighth.
The Mobile BayBears have sent 100 players to the major leagues. They'll kick off the 2010 baseball season at Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, April 14 when they play host to the Birmingham Barons. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
