Jaxx drop one-run affair to Smokies, 5-4, in season finale

JACKSON, TENN. (SEPTEMBER 7, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (35-35) drop the final game of the 2009 regular season to the Tennessee Smokies (39-31) at Pringles Park, 5-4. The playoff bound Smokies came from behind on Labor Day, trailing 2-1, but batting around and scoring four in the sixth inning. Mel Stocker led the Diamond Jaxx charge on offense with a season high four hits, going 4-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBI. Flemming Baez snapped an 0-for-27 slump by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The Jaxx end the season 62-78 on the season and the Smokies finish 71-69. At one point, Tennessee was 15 games below the .500 mark.

For the fourth time in the series, Tennessee took the lead in the first inning. Brandon Guyer doubled with one out, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by catcher, Flemming Baez. The Smokies jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Jaxx.

The Jaxx jumped out in front of the Smokies with two runs coming across in the bottom of the third. Mel Stocker smacked his second hit of the game, scoring David Espinosa. Later, Flemming Baez came around to score on a throwing error by Smokies second baseman Tony Thomas to make the score, 2-1 D-Jaxx.

Tennessee re-took the lead in the top of the sixth inning batting around and scoring four runs. Robinson Chirinos hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Marquez Smith from third. Ruzz Canzler doubled home Blake Lalli to tie the game at three apiece. Starlin Castro pinch hit for Wellington Castillo and Castro singled home Ty Wright and Russ Canzler putting the Smokies up 5-3.

The Jaxx pulled back within a run when Mel Stocker connected for his fourth hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth frame. Stocker drove home Flemming Baez, cutting the Smokies lead to 5-4.

The Jaxx will open the 2010 schedule in Jacksonville, FL, taking on the Suns on April 8-12th. Ezequiel Carrera did not play on Monday, but finished the season hitting .337, which wins the Southern League batting title and also sets the high mark for a Jaxx player. Carrera's winning of the batting title is the first in Diamond Jaxx history as well.
