Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC -- One year ago, the Carolnia Mudcats and Mississippi Braves played arguably the finest Southern League Championship Series, with the Braves winning the championship in the decisive fifth game. Monday afternoon, both teams concluded the regular season against one another with no post-season in their futures, winding up the 2009 regular season in a contest marred by a 35-minute rain delay and intermittent pesky rain.

Mississippi's Jon Owings homered on the final first-pitch of the finale, while Brandon Hicks drilled a solo shot in the ninth as Mississippi (34-34, 65-73) blanked Carolina 5-0 in front of 4,462 fans at Five County Stadium.

Carolina's Jeremy Horst (L, 1-4) watched his first fastball of the game hit over the left field wall by Owings, whose older brother is a pitcher in the major leagues with Carolina's parent club Cincinnati. Horst worked 7 1/3 innings permitting nine hits and four runs in taking the loss, but only trailed 1-0 in the seventh before the Braves scored twice in the seventh and added one in the eighth.

Meanwhile, Michael Broadway started just his second game of the season, working four scoreless innings before turning the game over to Lee Hyde (W, 2-1), who pitched three shutout innings to notch the victory.

Carolina (28-42, 65-74) saw its seven-game winning streak snapped and finished the second half in fourth place, 11 games behind Tennessee. Yonder Alonso had two of the Mudcats' four hits.
