Hagerstown used 12 hits and played pristine defense throughout the ballgame, while putting up a pair of five-run frames. The Suns took the series advantage, up two games to one, and blanked an opponent for the 11th time in the 2011 season. Hagerstown is now tied with Savannah in shutout victories. The Suns are (3-5) against Hickory this season.
Suns LHP Ryan Demmin (2-1), the winning pitcher, was terrific through 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, no walks, and striking out five over the duration. Demmin retired the final twelve batters he faced.
Hagerstown brought eight men to the plate in the 2nd inning and struck for five earned runs against RHP Joe Van Meter (5-4), the losing pitcher. RF Kevin Keyes, as part of a 4-for-4, two RBI night at the plate, struck a line drive single into right center field with one out before SS Jason Martinson belted a two-run home run over the left center field wall, his thirteenth homer of the season. Martinson was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI in the contest. 1B Brett Newsome drew a walk before C Adrian Nieto cranked a two-run bomb over the right center field fence, his first as a member of the Suns in his second game with Hagerstown. Then, CF Michael Taylor ripped a two-out single into left field preceding an RBI single by LF Sean Nicol into left field to put the Suns ahead 5-0.
Van Meter allowed six earned runs on eight hits in 5.0 frames, while walking three and fanning four.
The Suns added an additional run in the 3rd inning on back-to-back doubles by Keyes and Martinson, the first shot to deep center field and the next into the left center field gap.
Hagerstown put another run on the board in the 6th stanza off RHP Matt Thompson as Nicol ripped an RBI single back up the middle to plate 3B Justino Cuevas, who drew a walk to get aboard.
Then, the Suns blasted their way to a five-run spot in the 8th inning after bringing nine men to the plate. Taylor drew a one-out walk, Nicol also was given a free pass to first base, and with two outs C David Freitas earned a base-on-balls to load the bases. Keyes crushed a two-RBI double off the glove of LF Jhonny Gomez to score Taylor and Nicol. With runners at second and third base, Martinson walked to jack the bases once again before Newsome laced a bases clearing three-run triple to left center field. This was the second three-RBI triple for Newsome on the current road trip.
Thompson surrendered five earned runs in 2.2 innings on two hits and six walks, and Hickory RHP Andrew Doyle allowed one earned run in 1.1 innings, amidst two walks and one strikeout.
The Suns culminate their four-game road series with the game four finale on Thursday night.
