Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (11-6) come back fell short on Thursday night as the West Virginia Power (12-14) scored six runs on ten hits for the win at Municipal Stadium.
Power pitcher Roque Mercedes (1-1) was brilliant with five scoreless innings of work. Mercedes gave up two hits and two walks while he struck out three Suns batters.
The Power scored first with two in the top of the second on a throwing error by third baseman Steven Souza and an infield RBI single by Steffan Wilson.
West Virginia scored again off a botched pick off play. With runners on first and third, the Suns got Zelous Wheeler in a run down between first and second, but as the tag was applied, Brent Brewer scored from third
The Suns starter Hassan Pena (1-2) threw three innings but suffered the loss after he gave up only one earned run.
The Suns started a rally in the bottom half of the seventh as Tim Pahuta crushed a two out homer over the right field wall. It was Tim Pahuta's third home run of the season.
The Suns scored one more in the bottom of the eighth off a RBI single by Bill Rhinehart that scored Souza. With no outs and runners on first and third, Corey Frerichs came in and stuck out the next three Suns' batters to end the inning.
West Virginia scored one more in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly off of reliever Erik Arnesen to put the Suns away.
Frerichs struck out two more batters in the bottom of the ninth to complete the save, his first of the season.
The Suns will finish the four game series with West Virginia tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
