Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jacksonville Suns (32-29) fell 5-2 to the Montgomery Biscuits (28-33) in the first game of the five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night.

With the Suns' third straight loss and also the Mobile BayBears' 4-1 win over the Birmingham Barons on Thursday, the Suns are now four games out of first place behind Mobile with nine games to play in the first half.

Montgomery starter Nick Barnese (2-2) took the win after tossing six scoreless innings, only allowing four Jacksonville hits. Suns starter Darin Downs (1-5) took his third straight loss, giving up four runs on seven hits.

The Biscuits built an early lead on Downs, thanks to a RBI single for Stephen Vogt in the first inning to go-ahead 2-0. Montgomery added two more runs against Downs in the fifth, thanks to back-to-back RBI singles for Tim Beckham and Vogt to lead 4-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the first pitch thrown by Suns reliever Jeff Allison was hit over the left field wall by Nevin Ashley, and the solo homer increased the advantage to 5-0.

Jacksonville's only offense occurred in the seventh, as Ben Lasater smacked a two-run homer to put the Suns on the board with the score at 5-2. Kyle Skipworth shined at the plate in the Suns loss, going 3-4 with three singles.

Biscuits closer Zach Quate threw a scoreless ninth to earn his eighth save of the season as he preserved the 5-2 Montgomery win.

The clubs will play the second game of the series on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The Suns will start right-hander Omar Poveda (3-4, 4.52 ERA) while the Biscuits will start southpaw Matt Moore (3-3, 2.78 ERA). First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the game beginning at 7:50 p.m. on with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
