Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - On Thursday, BayBears first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was selected as the Southern League's Topps May Player of the Month. Goldschmidt batted .316 in May with eight home runs and 26 RBI while hitting safely in 25 of 31 games.

Goldschmidt, the D-backs' eighth-round draft choice in 2009 out of Texas State University, carried a season-high 11-game hitting streak during the month of May while leading the Southern League with 20 walks and 26 runs scored.

This honor comes one day after Goldschmidt was selected to the Southern League All-Star Game as a representative of the South Division roster. He leads all of Minor League Baseball with 20 home runs and has topped the Southern League with 57 runs batted in. His .349 average is third in the league while he's also first in on-base and slugging percentage.

Goldschmidt was the California League MVP in 2010 for the Visalia Rawhide after clubbing 35 home runs with 108 RBI and a .314 average. As a BayBear, he has homered in 11 of the 12 series that the BayBears have played in this season.

The BayBears are in action tonight at 7:05 as they begin a crucial five-game set with the Birmingham Barons at Regions Park. The BayBears return home to finish the first half against the Montgomery Biscuits in a five-game series that begins Wednesday, June 14, at 12:05 p.m. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or visit www.mobilebaybears.com.
