Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Suns' struggles in extra innings continued with a 3-1 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds in 10 innings at Municipal Stadium Thursday.

With the game tied at one heading to the 10th, the Shorebirds (55-22, 6-1) scored two runs in the innings against Trey Turner (L, 1-2)to take the lead. An RBI infield single from JC Encarnaciongave Delmarva the lead, and then a bases-loaded walk to Nick Horvath made it 3-1.

The Suns (32-46, 2-6) got runners to the corners with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, but couldn't convert against Shorebirds left Matt Hammonds (W, 2-2) who worked a scoreless inning to lock down the victory.

Yet again, Francys Peguero could not get a win in the box score despite a dominant start against Delmarva. The righy spun six-strong innings and allowed just one run on seven hits while striking out four. He now has 75 strikouts on the season, which is good for the team lead, which he took over from Tim Cate Thursday night. Peguero now has a 1.64 ERA in four starts this season against the Shorebirds, but does not have a win to show for it.

The only run against Peguero came across in the first inning when the Shorebirds mounted a two-out rally. It started with a Cadyn Grenier double, and then JC Encarnacion knocked him home with an RBI single into left field.

Ryan Wilson made his third start against Hagerstown this season, and had his best one to date. The lefty lasted six scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. Wilson struck out only one batter, but he induced a lot of soft contact against the Suns hitters.

The Hagerstown run to tie it came against the Delmarva bullpen in the seventh after Wilson exited the game. The Suns loaded the bases against Reed Hayes with one out and Trey Vickerscame through with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Jackson Cluff after his leadoff single and tied the game.

Both bullpens were very good in regulation, starting with Jackson Stoeckinger for the Suns. The lefty relieved Peguero and worked three strong innings without allowing a run. Stoeckinger has now allowed only one earned run over his last eight innings on the hill.

On the Delmarva side, Hayes allowed just that one run, which was uneared, over two innings, and then Hammonds got it to extras with a scoreless ninth in which he stranded a runner at third.

Hagerstown continues its series against Delmarva tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tomas Alastre (3-7, 6.16 ERA) gets the ball for the Suns while RHP Hector Guance (4-3, 3.76 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Shorebirds.

The Suns are in the midst of a seven-game homestand against the Delmarva Shorebirds and the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The stretch includes plenty of promotions, including Thirsty Thursday, Ghostbusters/80's Night, Sunday Funday, and Salute to America.
