Rome Emperors News Release
ROME, GA - The Rome Braves ended their week-long homestand with a 3-1 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday as the offense was unable to take advantage of a strong outing by starter RHP Odalvi Javier.
Despite their recent run of success the lineup could not maintain their torrid pace and finished the day 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Braves did have an early, albeit brief lead on Wednesday when they pushed across a run in the 1st inning. Jeremy Fernandez opened the frame with a double down the left field line and later scored on an RBI groundout by Griffin Benson. It was Benson's eighth RBI of the three game series.
The advantage was short lived as Charleston got consecutive doubles off Javier in the 2nd inning to go up 2-1. The RiverDogs would add an unearned run on a passed ball and eventual sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 edge in the 7th inning. Rome did not have a hit after the 5th but did put the tying run on base in the 8th before a ground ball ended the threat.
Charleston won the series, taking two out of three games at State Mutual Stadium.
Greg Cullen went 1-2 with a double, a walk and was hit by a pitch. Fernandez was 1-4 with a double and a run scored. Jose Bermudez was 1-4.
Javier took the loss but pitched well, going 7 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out five and walked one. Reliever RHP Luis Mora was strong in two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. He struck out two, walked one and allowed no hits while lowering his season ERA to 2.42.
Rome finishes their homestand with three wins in seven games and begins a week-long road trip through Greenville, SC and Kannapolis, NC on Thursday evening. The Braves will play four versus the Greenville Drive Thursday-Sunday.
First pitch of Game 1 from Flour Field is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Rome starts LHP Dilmer Mejia (4-1, 1.47). Greenville has not announced their starting pitcher for the opening game of the series.
