HOOVER, Ala. â Carlos Maldonado's two-run double in the bottom of the ninth off Suns closer Lino Urdaneta dealt Jacksonville a 4-3 loss to the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday.
The Suns (16-15) took a lead in the third inning when Tony Socarras hit a two-run home run off reliever Clay Eason. After two innings, rain delayed the ballgame for one hour and 10 minutes, prompting relievers for both starters.
The Suns walked eight batters and were bailed out of several situations to maintain their lead. The Barons (13-17) stranded 13 runners, including the bases loaded twice. However, the Suns never trailed until the final pitch from Urdaneta (0-3), the losing pitcher.
Jake Meyer (1-0) earned the win in relief for Birmingham.
Right-hander Tommy Farmer (1-1, 1.82 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Suns at 11 a.m. Central from Hoover Metropolitan Stadium against Barons righty Brian West (1-2, 5.74). The game will be broadcast on www.jaxsuns.com.
