May 7, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release
ORLANDO -Orlando Rays starting pitcher Jon Switzer pitched seven innings of near flawless ball, leading Orlando to a 6-2 win over the visiting Carolina Mudcats.
Carolina, which entered the game with a league-best .298 team bating average, could only muster two hits off the Rays' lefty, both of which came off the bat of Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera, the Southern League's top hitter with a ..413 average entering the contest, reached Switzer for a single and a two-run home run. The rest of the Mudcats lineup would have no such luck, as Switzer allowed only two hits, two runs and one walk while striking out five in 7.0 IP.
Jorge Cantu led the charge for the Rays, going 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Jonny Gomes went 2-3 with a double and a run scored, while Dan DeMent and Amado German each had a double and run scored.
The Rays and Mudcats will square off again tomorrow at 7:05, with the Rays sending RHP Brian Stokes (1-3, 1.72) to the mound to take on LHP Dontrelle Willis (4-0, 1.49).
O-Rays Notes:
· Upcoming promotions include Friday night fireworks and an ESPN The Magazine mini-bat giveaway
· The Rays and Mudcats have two more games together before the Rays head to Jacksonville for a four-game set with the Suns
