Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons took a 2-0 series lead over the Jacksonville Suns Wednesday afternoon by edging the Suns 5-4 at the Hoover Met in front of 4,305 fans.

The game got off to a quick start as each team plated a run in the second. The Suns Victor Diaz picked up his first RBI of the season with a single to left, which allowed Derek Michaelis to make it safely to home. The Barons would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning as Eric Battersby fouled out to right with a sacrifice fly that allowed Gabe Alvarez to score.

The Suns would rally in the third after Michaelis ripped a bases clearing, three-run double to right center to give the Suns a 4-1 lead in the top of the third. The score would remain the same until the fourth inning when Barons catcher Jonathan Aceves smashed his second homer of the season to cut the Suns lead to two.

The fifth inning would prove to be an explosive inning for the Barons. Carlos Maldonado came through with a big hit for the second game in a row by knocking in Ryan Hankins and Darron Ingram with a double to tie the game at four all. Alvarez then sent a line drive double to left to knock in Maldonado for what would end up being the winning run for the Barons.

Barons starter, Brian West (2-2) picked up the win after tossing five innings and giving up four runs and Suns starter Tommy Farmer (1-2) took the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings. Barons reliever Tetsu Yofu picked up his second save allowing only one hit in two scoreless innings after rejoining the team from Charlotte earlier in the day.

The Barons continue the four game series with game three tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. Birmingham sends out LHP Neal Cotts (4-1, 1.38) to face Jacksonville's RHP Heath Totten (3-2, 3.49).
