Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - The Suns swept a shortened series from the Mobile BayBears, winning both the completion of a suspended game, 6-5, and the nightcap, 5-1, in front of 1,615 fans Thursday at Hank Aaron Stadium.
In the full game, Delwyn Young doubled down the right field line, scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, giving the Suns a 2-1 lead they did not relinquish. Young also singled in a run in the sixth which broke a scoreless tie.
Suns reliever Carlos Alvarez struck out back-to-back batters with runners in scoring position, preserving a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Suns starter Chad Billingsley wriggled out of a bases loaded, one-out situation in the fourth, garnering two of his nine strikeouts to end the threat.
Reliever Richard Bartlett (2-1) earned the win, but walked three, including one with the bases loaded in the seventh. He was supported by Young and James Loney's two-run double in the eighth to pad the Suns lead to 4-1. Justin Ruggiano homered in his first start as a Sun, a solo shot in the ninth. Luis Gonzalez pitched two scoreless innings to notch his fifth save.
BayBears reliever Nathanel Mateo (3-4) gave up the Young double and was responsible for the two who scored on Loney's hit, which dealt him the loss. The BayBears did not walk a batter. Mobile starter Jose Oyervidez went seven innings, allowing one run and striking out five.
Martin doubled in a run in the sixth inning of the resumed game, giving the Suns the eventual go-ahead score. In the full game, he went 0-for-4 with a sacrifice and did not reach base in a game he started and completed for the second time this season.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (1-2, 3.50 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Montgomery righty Brian Lockwood (3-3, 4.04) at 7:05 p.m. Friday as the Suns (, second half) face the Biscuits (42-42, 7-7) in the first game of a four-game series. Broadcast time on WFXJ-AM 930 The Fox and www.jacksonville.com is 6:50 p.m.
