Suns defeat Mobile, magic number to clinch playoff berth nine

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns picked up right where they left off on the recent 10-game road trip during their homecoming Friday as strong offense and stellar pitching led the Suns to a 6-3 victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of 7,461 at the Baseball Grounds.

The win combined with Montgomery's loss in Chattanooga Friday night pulls the Suns magic number to clinch down to nine. Any combination of Suns wins and Biscuits losses that total nine will clinch the first half division title for the defending Southern League Champions. In addition, the Suns have now won 16 of their last 20 games.

The Suns trailed in the first inning as Mobile's Luis Cruz continued his hot hitting this season against Jacksonville with a solo homerun off of Jacksonville starter T.J. Nall to open up a 1-0 lead.

That lead would be short lived as the Suns scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Justin Ruggiano and Brad Cresse both belted solo homeruns to give Jacksonville a 2-1 lead.

Jacksonville added to the lead with two outs in the sixth inning as an error by the third baseman allowed the third Jacksonville run to score and the inning to continue. Craig Brazell next belted a double off of the centerfield warning track that drove home two runs and opened up a 5-1 lead. The Southern League's leading RBI man Andy LaRoche then drove home another run on a single to extend the Suns lead to 6-1.

The BayBears Chris O'Riordan hit a pinch-hit, two-run homerun in the ninth inning off of Suns reliever Justin Simmons to finish the scoring at 6-3.

T.J. Nall pitched six innings in his third start of the season, allowing only two hits including the solo homerun from Cruz. Nall walked three and struck out six to improve to 2-2. Sean Thompson fell to 1-5 in the loss for Mobile allowing six runs, with only two earned in 5.2 innings.

Jacksonville and Mobile meet in game two of the series Saturday night at 7:05 ET. The Famous Chicken will make his only appearance at the Baseball Grounds this season. Tickets are available by calling the Suns ticket office at 904.358.2846.
