JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (18-20, 55-53) won 8-6 over the Montgomery Biscuits (20-18, 54-54) in front of 3,962 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Tuesday night.
Jacksonville starter Omar Poveda (7-5) earned his second straight home victory with a strong performance, tossing seven innings with only one earned run given up on four hits. He also threw the first six innings in scoreless fashion, as he walked two and struck out four. Montgomery starter Shane Dyer (5-7) took the loss as the Suns take a 2-1 lead in this series headed into Wednesday's fourth game of the five-game set.
The Suns built an early 2-0 lead on Dyer. After Kyle Skipworth drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run in the bottom of the first, Luke Montz made it a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI double. The Suns would expand the lead to 5-0 with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Chris Gutierrez.
The Biscuits would score for the first time against Poveda in the top of the seventh with a three-run rally that included two unearned runs. With the score at 5-3, Jacksonville answered back by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, with Skipworth getting an RBI single and Jake Smolinski following with an RBI double to extend the Jacksonville lead to 7-3. Paul Gran also added to the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth, to give the Suns a five-run advantage going into the ninth.
Montgomery made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. After scoring a run, Tim Beckham hit a two-RBI single that cut Jacksonville's lead to 8-6. That was as close as the Biscuits would get, as Sandy Rosario forced Cole Figueroa to fly out to right field to end the game in a Suns victory.
The Suns and Biscuits will play the fourth game of the five game series on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds. Wednesday's game will feature "Christmas in August," with Suns fans receiving early Christmas presents, including a 2011 team photo. It will also be "Wicked Wednesday," with ladies receiving two-for-one tickets and all fans can enjoy two-for-one cocktails plus $2 beers from Miller.
Right-handed pitcher Bryan Evans (0-0, 3.38 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville against Montgomery's right-hander Alex Colome (1-0, 3.38 ERA). Wednesday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
