Birmingham Barons News Release

HOOVER, Ala. -- The Jacksonville Suns scored seven unanswered runs to overcome an early two-run deficit and coast to a 7-2 win over the Birmingham Barons Tuesday night.

Birmingham (40-31, 0-1) struggled offensively for the third straight game, managing just five hits against Jacksonville starter Cody White (2-0). White allowed a two-run double by Javier Colina in the first frame, but allowed just three hits over the next six innings to get the win. His counterpart, Barons starter Kyle McCulloch (4-6), was tagged for 11 hits over seven innings, and he allowed four runs (three earned).

Trailing 2-0 entering the third, the Suns (34-37, 1-0) used three hits and an error to plate a pair of runs and tie the game. An inning later, an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single gave Jacksonville a 4-2 lead and an advantage it would not relinquish. The Suns added a two-run double in the eighth and an RBI double in the ninth to push the final margin to 7-2.

The Barons only pushed two runners into scoring position after the first inning. The top third of the batting order (Miguel Negron, Victor Mercedes, and Colina) was a combined 5-for-10, but the remainder of the lineup was 0-for-22. The loss was the fourth in five contests for Birmingham, which has averaged just five hits over its last three games.

Game two of the series is scheduled for an early start Wednesday, with a late-morning first-pitch time of 11:05 am. RHP Justin Cassel (5-3) will start for Birmingham, and he will be opposed by fellow righty James McDonald (3-2).
